A group of teachers urged the Department of Education (DepEd) to fairly implement the Anti-Bullying Act of 2013 or RA10627 to protect the bullied and the bully.

According to Teachers’ Dignity Coalition (TDC),  teachers and school officials will now have a clear legal definition of bullying as basis for procedure in handling bullying cases in school as well as mechanism in preventing it.

Benjo Basas, TDC national chairman, said anti-bullying is part of the Child Protection Policy which the DepEd adopted last year and with the enactment of the law, the DepEd can now improve its policy on bullying.

Basas cited a UNICEF study in 2009 which shows that most of the abuses that took place in schools are cases of bullying. He offered the assistance of his group in crafting the implementing rules of the law.

Earlier, the DepEd said the “Anti-Bullying Act of 2013” will apply not only to students who bully their fellow students but also to teachers and school officials who commit the same offense.
