Latest News Philippines: 1 of 7 pawnshop robbers falls – Journal.com.ph:
LUCENA City — Three hours after a broad daylight robbery of the city’s biggest pawnshop on Saturday, police operatives arrested one of the seven suspects inside the PNR Compound in Bgy. 10, here.
Lucena City OIC police chief Supt. Sergio Vivar said the arrested suspect, Maximo Aguilar, 37, jobless, acted as lookout during the heist at Raquel Pawnshop on Zamora St. at around 9 a.m.
In a phone interview, Vivar told this writer that Aguilar was spotted by a tricycle driver as one of five suspects who stepped out of the pawnshop shortly after the robbery. He said establishment’s security guard Edgardo Maquiling also saw Aguilar boarded a waiting get-away motorcycle driven by another suspect.
Vivar said five of the suspects actually entered the pawnshop as shown by the CCTV camera while two others, both driving motorcycles, served as lookouts a few meters away.
He said pawnshop owner Reynaldo Raquel declared a loss of Php1 million worth of jewelry in the heist.
However, after Aguilar’s arrest, rumors spread that the suspect was only a fall guy and his arrest was only a scenario by the police. But Vivar dismissed these allegations, saying his arrest was ligitimate.
“Aguilar was not seen in the CCTV camera but he was positively identified by the trike driver and the security guard. We have solid ground to arrest him,” said Vivar.
He also said in a radio interview that Aguilar could also be part of the daring bank robbery last July 26 that left three of its security guards dead.
