ATIMONAN, Quezon — A policeman was killed while a suspected robber was wounded in a shootout in Bgy. Angeles, here, Wednesday afternoon.

Quezon police director Senior Supt. Valeriano de Leon identified the fatality as PO3 Francisco Villania, assigned at Atimonan Police Station. The wounded robber who is fighting for his life in the hospital was identified as Arturo Jurado.

De Leon said that Villania and PO2 Benito Reyes were on routine patrol at the town proper when they received a radio message that a robbery was in progress at a convenience store perpetrated by four armed men and a woman in Bgy. Zone 2 at around 3 p.m.

The policemen quickly responded but the armed robbers had just left aboard a tricycle. They chased the suspects and engaged them in a shootout on Maharlika Highway in Bgy. Angeles.

While trading bullets, Villania shot Jurado but he was also hit several times in the body, killing him instantly, De Leon said.

Two of the robbers identified as Miguel Targa and Elmer Encina commandeered a passing passenger jeepney and escaped but they were eventually arrested at a police dragnet set up in nearby Plaridel town under Senior Insp. Marcelino Platino, the police chief, he said.

According to De Leon, two other suspects — a woman identified as alias April and a certain Bobby, both residents of Tayabas City — escaped.

Targa and Encina yielded an Uzi sub-machine gun, a cal. .38 revolver, two cellphones and an undetermined amount of money.

In a follow-up operation, the pursuing cops also found the abandoned get-away tricycle registered under the name of Jurado, who is now in critical condition at the Que-zon Medical Center in Lucena City.

Supts. Francisco Ebreo and Ranser Evasco, head of the Quezon Police Provincial Operation and Investigation Branch, respectively, said the Uzi was the one stolen by the robbers along with cash and other belongings inside the sports center and warehouse of businessman Allan Arquiza in Bgy. Domoit, Lucena City, last January 22.

Ebreo and Evasco, along with Quezon police deputy director Supt. Renato Alba proceeded to the crime scene shortly after the incident to supervise the investigation and follow-up operation on orders of De Leon.

Investigators said the suspects had something to do with several robbery incidents in Quezon a few months ago.
