CITY of San Fernando, Pampanga — Gov. Lilia G. Pineda yesterday recommended the mandatory drug testing of all candidates in the coming Sangguniang Kabataan and barangay elections to ascertain that no candidate is involved in illegal drugs.
Pineda passed her recommendation to top officials of the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) after learning that some village officials in Pampanga are reportedly involved in use and proliferation of illegal drugs in their respective areas.
Recently, Myrvie Fabia, provincial interior and local government director, told the governor that some barangay officials were suspected drug users or either has direct knowledge of illegal drugs operation in the locality.
“The provincial government will give its full support and cooperation to DILG for whatever measure it will take to prevent any person involved in illegal drug operation to join the election,” Pineda said.
She also urged the DILG to take measure in the identification of candidates who are involved in drug use and drug pushing.
In line with this, the governor instructed all barangay officials in the province to monitor and report immediately to the police any member of their councils, including Bantay-Bayan volunteers and local residents, suspected to have direct involvement in illegal drugs.
Pineda said combating illegal drugs is a huge task for all local government officials and asked everyone to be vigilant.
