Latest News Philippines: Hunt for ‘brains’ in the killing of Capiz mayoral candidate up – Journal.com.ph:
POLICE Regional Office 6 director Chief Superintendent Agrimero A. Cruz Jr. yesterday said they have stepped-up their hunt for a mayoral candidate in Capiz who has been tagged as the one who masterminded the assassination of his closest rival for the post on May 4 last year.
Cruz identified the suspect as Engineer Leodegario Labao Jr. alias ‘Boss Labao,’ a mayoralty candidate in Mambusao, Capiz who is facing a murder case in connection with the killing of then 79-year old Mambusao Vice Mayor Abel Martinez.
Labao escaped arrest by the police while undergoing treatment of chest pains in an Iloilo hospital last April 14. Cruz said some persons believed to have helped Labao escape are now undergoing investigation. Labao, a member of the National Unity Party has denied the charges against him.
Several witnesses including captured suspects in the killing of Martinez have tagged Labao as the “brains” behind the assassination of the vice mayor. Another suspect in the murder of Martinez identified as Geger Francisco was arrested by members of the Special Task Force Martinez and the PNP Intelligence Group along Katipunan Avenue corner Aurora Boulevard in Loyola Heights, Quezon City.
Cruz said Francisco has been identified as one of the nine men who took part in the killing of Martinez. Other suspects in the assassination of Martinez are already behind bars since last year. One of them identified as Roger Loredo was arrested in a local hospital after he was injured when his own grenade exploded on July 15, 2012 in Calinog, Iloilo, or more than two months after the killing of Martinez.
Loredo is now detained at the Iloilo Provincial Integrated Jail – Bureau of Jail Management and Penology in Barangay Nanga, Pototan, Iloilo for cases of murder and frustrated murder with the use of unlicensed firearms and attempted murder he committed on separate occasions.
Cruz said that in his sworn affidavit, Loredo mentioned a detailed information on how Engr. Labao whom they also called ‘Boss Labao’masterminded the crime.
The police general said that Loredo had confessed that they were hired by Labao to kill Martinez for P150,000. Loredo said he got P40,000 from the hit job.
Loredo disclosed that the assassination plan against Martinez started in March 2012. He identified one Gilbie Prinsipe as the actual gunman who killed Martinez.
Prinsipe was killed by his own grenade on October 13 last year in Del Carmen Street in Jaro, Iloilo. He was about to be cornered by policemen manning a checkpoint which he ignored when he detonated the grenade that killed him instantly. Loredo said they were contacted by one Army Staff Sergeant Rommel Pamotillo alias ‘Nene Army’ to participate in the assassination of Martinez.
Pamotillo is now detained in a Manila hospital where he is undergoing a medical treatment.
