Latest News Philippines: Sayyaf arrested in Zamboanga –

THE Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) arrested a suspected member of the Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG) in Zamboanga City.

CIDG chief Director Samuel D. Pagdilao Jr. identified the ASG extremist as Isnajir Sakkam, alias Abu Fatima, of Rio Hondo, Zamboanga City.

Pagdilao said Abu Fatima, an alleged member of ASG wanted for kidnapping and serious illegal detention, was arrested at around 7:30 a.m. Thursday at the Zamboanga City Public Market.

He said Sakkam was involved in the Golden Harvest Plantation hostage-taking incident in Bgy. Tairan, Lantawan, Basilan, on June 11, 2001.

Members of the CIDG’s Community Investigative Support (CIS) and two witnesses positively identified the suspect as a member of ASG leader Isnilon Hapilon in Basilan.

A report said that the suspect is still young but carries a high-powered firearm when the group kidnapped a certain Zaldy Binasing, 14, and brought him, together with other hostages, to the mountainous areas of Lantawan, Isabela and Sumisip for four months.
