Latest News Philippines: How to understand a complicated movie –

IS it possible to squeeze in seven stories in a one-and-a-half hour movie? Could each of the stories be justified at the end of the film? Director Mae Cruz has proven it’s attainable.

Star Cinema has a reputation of producing high quality movies.  This film production arm of ABS-CBN has produced some of the most well-acclaimed movies in the history of Philippine cinema with their Maalaala Mo Kaya (1994), Madrasta (1996), Bata, Bata.. Paano Ka Ginawa (1998), Anak (2000), Tanging Yaman (2000), Bagong Buwan (2001), Dekada ’70 (2002), Nasaan Ka Man (2005) and In My Life (2009).

Because of its ‘pioneering’ style, Star Cinema’s films topped at the box-office and garnered top-15 highest grossing Filipino films of all time such as  (2012), The Mistress (2012), No Other Woman (2011), You Changed My Life (2009), This Guy’s in Love with U Mare! (2012), A Very Special Love (2008), ÜnOfficially Yours (2012), One More Chance (2007) My Amnesia Girl (2010), Miss You Like Crazy (2010), A Love Story (2007), Caregiver (2008), In My Life (2009), For the First Time (2008), and Kimmy Dora and the Temple of Kiyeme (2012).

Now, Star Cinema has an additional ‘extraordinary’ movie titled 24/7 In Love.  The title itself could indicate another out-of-the-box idea conceptualized by the movie outfit’s think tank headed by Mr. M (Johnny Manahan).

24/7 In Love is about the tale of seven pairs of peculiar ‘lovers’. Can a ‘commitment phobe’ man (Diether Ocampo as Ken) change his perspective on love with a hopeless romantic girl (Maja Salvador as Barbara)?   Will a 40-year-old virgin (Pokwang as Virgie)) find true love with a gigolo (Sam Milby as Charles)?   Will love bloom when an idol (Daniel Padilla as Billy) and his greatest fan (Kathryn Bernardo as Jane) meet?  Kathryn and Daniel may still be young, but they can already teach moviegoers significant things about love in their episode in 24/7. Can a gay man (Zanjoe Marudo as Butch) fall for his girl best friend (Bea Alonzo as Belle)?

Kim Chiu and Gerald Anderson are reunited in the episode ‘Underwear Hero.’ Is this the start of the continuation of ‘Kimerald’ love team, and this time will it be sweeter? The young love team was last seen in the movie Till My Heartaches End in 2010.

And what will happen when a revengeful married woman (Angelica Panganiban as Verna) meets a bachelor John Lloyd Cruz as Elvis) abroad and fall in love with him?

Finally, what comes next happen when a new girl Ayie (played by Xyriel) enters the friendship of a 35-year-old mentally challenged Pipoy (Piolo Pascual), who lives in an orphanage and is happy spending his days with his best friend, 10-year-old Jomar (Zaijan Jaranilla)?

The ‘weirdest’ love story, but the most dramatic, is the episode of Piolo, Zaijan and Xyriel.  “For me, it’s my most challenging role.  Akalain mo ba naman na at my age ay gumaganap akong 7 years old at ka-love team ko si Xyriel and ka-love triangle ko si Zaijian!” Piolo said during the press conference for 24/7.

Diether described his episode with Maja as the ‘dark kind.’ Diet plays a successful businessman who has lots of personal issues he could not resolve alone until Maja’s character enters the picture.

Sam and Pokwang’s love story is the comedy relief in Star Cinema’s 20th anniversary offering.  They bring to life the comic story of Charles and Virgie. “Our episode has a lot of firsts.  This is my first time doing a movie with Pokwang as my love interest. In the movie, ako ‘yung first kiss niya ever in a movie. She’s a virgin here in terms of kissing scene, so I’m happy that I’m the first!,” according to Sam.

Real-life lovers Bea and Zanjoe are playing an odd couple in their episode.  Belle (Bea) falls for her best friend Butch. The hitch is, her friend is gay who is in love with a man. “Ngayon lang ako nag-portray ng role na ganito ka-persistent at ka-obsessed sa isang character din. At saka first time ko gumanap na na-in love sa isang beki,” Bea said while laughing.

All the 7 love stories entwined in Star Cinema’s 20th anniversary presentation  hold questions the viewers must fully observe for them to be able to understand and enjoy the movie.

“In fact, simple lang naman ang bawat istorya sa 24/7 at may solid justification in the end.  Pero, kailangan lang talagang intindihing mabuti.  Ganyan naman ang mga pelikula ng Star Cinema, bukod sa mga aktingan na nakikita sa screen, may lessons and positive values in life na maoobserbahan ang moviegoers sa takbo ng istorya.  In other words, ang bawat pelikula namin ay ginawa not only to entertain, but also to instill positive values sa viewers,” relates film director Mae Cruz.
