Latest News Philippines: Maui Taylor’s Korean Film to compete in Cannes Film Festival – Journal.com.ph:
FORMER Viva Hotbabe Maui Taylor is now on her way to international stardom. The Korean movie, “The Taste of Money,” features Maui as an overseas Filipino worker employed under a powerful family. Joining her in the cast are highly-recognized Korean stars Kim Kang-woo, Kim Hyo-jin, Baek Yoon-sik and Yoon Yeo-joong.
The film, which was directed by Hong Sang-soo, has also been officially invited to compete in the 65th Cannes Film Festival on May 16 to 27. Set to premiere this May 15 in Korea, it tells the story of a “chaebol” (conglomerate-owning) family in South Korea and their world of money, love, hate and sex.
Destined to be part of the movie, Maui didn’t actually audition for the role. Upon seeing her acting in the Joel Lamangan film, “Huling Birhen Sa Lupa,” movie producers then picked Maui as the only Filipina in the cast.
“I didn’t audition. I just got lucky that they were down to two artist which are Katrina Halili and I. What made me win the role was Joey Lamangan’s movie that I was in which is Huling Birhen Sa Lupa. When they saw the film, they said ‘Huwag na kayong maghanap ng iba. Siya na talaga yung gusto namin,” Maui explained.
During her four months of stay in Korea, Maui developed a special love for the country’s culture and people. “Learning their culture wasn’t very hard for me.” She describes Koreans as “hospitable” just like the Filipinos.
Nevertheless, Maui admits that she had to learn the Korean language in order to communicate with her co-stars.” The people, ‘yun medyo kapain kasi one is the language barrier. ‘Yun ‘yung talagang number one na naghohold sa’yo eh. I had to learn their language somehow. They were learning English as well para lang magkaintindihan kaming lahat.”
Adjusting to a new working environment, Maui found it unusual that she was only required to work ten hours a day. “In terms of working, dito (Philippines) alam naman natin, we shoot two days, three days. We go on para lang matapos natin. Do’n (Korea) talaga strictly ten hours ‘yung shoot namin. It’s Hollywood style.”
Now that she’s been given big break in the international scene, Maui hopes to break away from her image of being a bold star. “It’s a step higher for me,” she said.
