Latest News Philippines: ‘Ato’ to coach Ginebra — report – Journal.com.ph:
IT will be Ato Agustin who will call the shots for Barangay Ginebra San Miguel in the coming PBA Governor’s Cup on an ‘interim’ capacity.
The league’s former Most Valuable Player is set to be named the new head coach of the league’s most popular team which became mired in controversy following the sudden resignation of head coach Alfrancis Chua.
Prior to assuming the coaching reins of the Gin Kings, Agustin was also the head coach of Petron which he led to championship in its maiden season in the PBA before he was replaced by Olsen Racela at the start of the 2012-13 season.
A Spin.ph report by Snow Badua said that Agustin got the nod since he had the most head-coaching experience from among the Ginebra staff left after Chua’s surprise resignation last month.
“Siya ang may experience sa coaching pool. Kaya siya ang nilagay,” said the source as quoted by Badua.
The other members of the Ginebra staff are Boycie Zamar, Art dela Cruz, George Gallent, and Freddie Abuda. Allan Caidic and Juno Sauler are also expected to rejoin the staff after La Salle’s season in the UAAP.
Chua, meanwhile, will remain in the Ginebra organization where he act as the Gin Kings’ team manager upon the proddings of some players.
Chua, who was prevailed upon to file a leave of absence instead of a resignation after Noli Eala was removed from his post as San Miguel Corp.’s consultant for basketball operations, is set to stay on, although in a different capacity. He will replace Robert Non.
The decisions were announced before the players in the presence of SMC boss Ramon S. Ang on Thursday afternoon at the company’s office in Ortigas.
Agustin will begin his coaching reign, on an interim basis, at the team’s practice this morning at the Reyes Gym in Mandaluyong.
“Nakiusap talaga kami sa management na sana huwag alisin si coach Al totally sa set-up,” said a player who asked not to be named. “We want his presence in the team. He has been an inspiration to us and how he motivates the team will always be missed,” he added.
